THE REICHERT TESTER IS AN EXCELLENT TOOL FOR LUBRICANT AND ADDITIVE MANUFACTURERS TO EVALUATE THE WEAR PREVENTIVE (WP) AND EXTREME PRESSURE (EP) PROPERTIES OF THEIR SAMPLES. THIS TEST WAS DEVELOPED AS A QUICK METHOD TO IDENTIFY THE FORMATION OF A LUBRICATING FILM BETWEEN TWO TEST SURFACES. THE REICHERT TESTER USES A DROP IN NOISE LEVEL (SCREECHING) TO IDENTIFY WHEN A LUBRICATING FILM IS SUCCESSFULLY FORMED BETWEEN THE TEST SURFACES. THE REICHERT FRICTION AND WEAR TESTER CONSISTS OF A RIGIDLY-MOUNTED TEST ROLL WHICH PRESSES AGAINST A REVOLVING FRICTION WHEEL BY MEANS OF A WEIGHTED LEVER. THE FRICTION WHEEL IS SEMI IMMERSED IN THE TEST FLUID. ITS ROTATING SPEED IS OF SUCH A RATE THAT A SUFFICIENT QUANTITY OF LUBRICANT IS ALWAYS IN THE CONTACT AREA BETWEEN THE TEST ROLL AND THE FRICTION WHEEL. THIS MACHINE IS WIDELY USED WITHIN THE LUBRICANT INDUSTRY DUE TO THE AVAILABILITY OF NUMEROUS TEST METHODS AND METALLIC COMPONENTS. DUE TO THE CROSSWISE ARRANGEMENT OF THE AXLES AN ELLIPTICAL WEARING SURFACE IS FORMED THE SIZE OF WHICH GROWS AS A FUNCTION OF OPERATING TIME. THE EXTENSION OF THE WEARING SURFACE RESULTS IN A DECREASE OF THE ABSOLUTE PRESSURE BETWEEN FRICTION WHEEL AND TEST ROLL AND WE WOULD NORMALLY EXPECT A LOAD-CARRYING LUBRICANT FILM TO BE BUILT-UP IN THE CONTACT ZONE. THIS EFFECT CAN BE RECOGNIZED BY A SUDDEN DISCONTINUATION OF THE GRINDING NOISE APPARENT WHEN WE FIRST START THE TESTS. THE SIZE OF THE WEAR SCAR GIVES A RATING FOR THE FLUID UNDER EXAMINATION. TYPICAL APPLICATIONS: A) EVALUATION OF LUBRICANTS WITH RESPECT TO THEIR LOAD CARRYING CAPACITY. B) DETERMINATION OF THE DETERIORATION IN FILM FORMING PROPERTIES OF LUBRICANTS (FOR EXAMPLE GEAR OILS) AND CUTTING FLUIDS. C) SELECTION OF SUITABLE ADDITIVES WHEN DEVELOPING OR IMPROVING NEAT CUTTING OILS AND WATER SOLUBLE CUTTING FLUIDS.
